Dr. Shazli Manzoor, M.D., FCCP, FCCM, is a renowned Pulmonologist and Intensivist with over two decades of leadership in critical care, pulmonology, and medical education. As Medical Director at Kulsum International Hospital, Islamabad, he has established and managed state-of-the-art ICUs, led pandemic responses, and contributed extensively to research, teaching, and professional development.

Biography

Dr. Shazli Manzoor, is a distinguished pulmonologist, intensivist, and medical leader with a career spanning over two decades in critical care medicine and pulmonary health. Born on May 25, 1966, in Pakistan, Dr. Manzoor holds Pakistani citizenship and has consistently demonstrated excellence in medical practice, research, and education.

Dr. Manzoor is currently the Medical Director and Head of the Department of Critical Care and Pulmonology at Kulsum International Hospital (KIH), Islamabad. Since joining KIH in 2011, he has pioneered the establishment of a state-of-the-art 9-bedded Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and led the hospital’s COVID-19 response with innovative strategies. His achievements include managing over 1,000 patients in a unique OPD-based COVID unit without hospital admissions, ensuring zero fatalities. His efforts in training staff, managing patient anxieties, and raising public awareness during the pandemic have been exemplary.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Manzoor served as the Medical Director of the ICU and Program Director for Critical Care Fellowship at Shifa International Hospital (SIH), where he developed an 11-bedded ICU. He also contributed to establishing another ICU during his tenure as Head of Department at Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital (QIH).

Academically, Dr. Manzoor holds certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine and is board-eligible for Critical Care Medicine. His training includes an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Chicago Medical School/Finch University of Health Sciences. He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Manzoor’s research contributions are notable, with publications in leading journals, including the Chest Journal and Critical Care Medicine. His work on COVID-19 clinical characteristics, acute kidney injuries, and other critical care topics has been recognized at international platforms such as the Chest Annual Meeting and the Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress.

    • Established and managed 9 bedded Medical intensive care unit and treated critically ill and ventilated patients. Also performed bed side interventional and lifesaving procedures.
  • Supervised and managed the COVID Pandemic by adopting following measures:
      1. Planned policies for triage and initial assessment of people entering the hospital
      2. Established protocols for isolation of patients.
      3. Assumed responsibility of isolation ward which was state of the art COVID 19 unit where patients were admitted and I treated 150 serious patients with limited resources. This unit worked lie an ICU having patients on ventilators, noninvasive ventilation and close monitoring.
      4. By introducing a new concept, I managed a 9 bedded COVID unit for OPD/day care patients who required medications, Noninvasive ventilation and high flow oxygen support and did not require admission. More than 1000 patients have been treated without admitting them due to shortage of beds. No patient died here.
      5. Trained medical staff for continuous monitoring of sick and critically ill ventilated patients.
      6. Managed the emotional and anxious state of patients as well as their families.
      7. Assumed mass campaign for education and awareness of general population as a voluntary work through electronic and social media.
      8. Gathered and compiled data for research and article writing.
      9. One articles on COVID pandemic is selected for publication in Journal of society of critical care medicine USA which will be part of upcoming 50th Virtual Critical Care Congress 2021. Three articles were presented in the Chest Annual Meeting Oct 2020 as a virtual event.
      10. Earlier in 2017 and 2018 there was Influenza outbreak and it also was a pandemic situation. Situation was also out of control at that time. I managed admitted patients and Outpatients in Kulsum International hospital.
      11. Being on panels of embassies as medical advisor, I have been advising consulates, embassies and diplomats on preventive and therapeutic measure of COVID-19 in the current scenario.
      12. I also have experience of swine flu which spread earlier in 2009 where I admitted numerous patients in Shifa International hospital. Although less dangerous yet it was an epidemic of larger scale. That experience did help me in the current COVID pandemic.
